Photonics industry Advances Sustainability as a Strategic Priority at EPIC Meeting

February, 2026

The latest EPIC Sustainability Meeting brought together members of the photonics community to examine how companies in the sector are shifting sustainability from a reporting requirement to a core element of business strategy.

Participants highlighted that increasing regulatory pressure—along with rising expectations from investors—is driving companies to measure environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance with far greater precision. As a result, strong sustainability leadership is emerging as a competitive advantage within the photonics market.

A key topic of discussion was the growing role of digital tools and AI‑enabled platforms in helping companies manage their sustainability commitments. Solutions such as Brightest are being used to automate data collection, analyze performance trends, and streamline compliance across carbon, water, waste, and social metrics.

Two companies—DELO and Instrument Systems—shared concrete examples of how these trends are being adopted in practice:

- DELOpresented its ongoing work in product carbon footprint calculations, sustainability reporting, and engagement in external ESG ratings.

 - Instrument  Systems emphasized the human side of sustainability, detailing its structured approach to employee wellbeing measurement  through surveys and continuous feedback mechanisms.

EPIC members actively engaged in the discussion, contributing insights on challenges and opportunities facing the photonics industry as sustainability expectations continue to evolve.

EPIC extended its appreciation to all speakers and participants, with special thanks to committee members Katharina Zeuner (Eclipse Optics), Elizabeth Illy (Hubner Photonics), and Estefania Cervantes (Edmund Optics) for their leadership in shaping the program.
